A Norman-era castle, Colchester Castle is undenibaly one of the finest castles in Europe; not only is the keep the largest Norman keep in Europe, it is also arguably the best-preserved too. Furtheremore, it has a history that stretches back a milennia before its construction, with the ruins of the Roman Temple of Claudius serving as its foundation.

Colchester Castle stands at the gates of Castle Park, a Victorian-era park that spans 11 hectares throughout the middle of Colchester. Castle Park represents a huge open green space in the centre of town, and is home not only to Colchester Castle, but to Hollytrees Museum, while Colchester Natural History Museum is just across the street from the front gates. A variety of events are anually hosted in Castle Park, including Colchester Medieval Fayre and Colchester Food and Drink Festival.
