The Avro Vulcan was one of three 'V bombers' developed for the Royal Air Force in the years after the Second World War, to carry the nation's nuclear weapons. The Vulcan entered RAF service in 1956, and remained in service for almost thirty years before retiring in 1984. From 1963 it was officially known as the Hawker Siddeley Vulcan. Several Vulcans survive to this day, though none are currently airworthy; the last flying Vulcan, XH558, made its farewell flight in 2015. Prior to that, the Vulcan had been popular at airshows for its iconic delta-wing shape, and for the distinctive howl of its Bristol Olympic engines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Vulcan only once dropped bombs in anger: during Operation Black Buck in 1982. In what was at the time the longest-ranged bombing run in history, seven bombing runs were carried out against Argentinian forces in the Falklands by Vulcan based 7,600 miles away at Ascension Island. Depicted in this illustration is a scene from Black Buck One on 1 May 1982, with Vulcan XM607 approaching the Falklands, piloted by Martin Withers. XM607 successfully bombed Port Stanley airfield, forcing the Argentinians to withdraw their fast jets from the island. To get XM607 to and from the Falklands, eleven Handley Page Victor tankers made fifteen fuel transfers; further refuelling was needed to get home.
