Built from 1979 to 1982, the Orwell Bridge is a concrete box girder bridge, crossing the Orwell in 18 spans, with a total length of 1,287 metres. The bridge carries the A14 (Ipswich Bypass) over the water, and is used by almost 70,000 vehicles per day. At its highest, the bridge rises to 43 metres, allowing for shipping traffic heading to and from the Port of Ipswich to pass beneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile controversial at the time of its construction, the Orwell Bridge has come to be an iconic symbol of Ipswich and the River Orwell more generally.
