High quality greeting card of the Crowstone (also known as the London Stone or the City Stone) on Chalkwell Beach in the City of Southend-on-Sea, Essex. The Crowstone, an obelisk of granite, was first erected to mark the outer boundary of the City of London's 'riparian water rights' over the Thames estuary; the 'Yantlet Line' spans the Thames Estuary between the Crowstone and a similar stone at Yantlet Creek, marking 34 miles from London Bridge.
The current Crowstone was erected in 1837, replacing an earlier boundary stone that had been on the site since 1755; there was an earlier stone in place as early as 1285. The older stone (referred to as the Old Crowstone) was moved to Priory Park in Prittlewell. The 'new' Crowstone stands on Chalkwell Beach, just south of Chalkwell Esplanade, and is a Grade II listed monument.
