The European Ford Escort, initially introduced by Ford Europe as a classic family car, would later branch out into higher performance models. Following the success of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ford developed the Escort MkIII XR3 - a high-performance hot hatch model fitted with a 1.6 L CVH engine - in 1980.
