Original illustration of a Consolidated B-24 Liberator, an American heavy bomber used by the United States Army Air Forces during World War Two. While overshadowed in popular memory by the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, the Liberator was the backbone of America's bombing force during the war, and was the most-produced American military aircraft in history, with almost 20,000 produced in total.
Depicted here is Liberator 42-52618 of the 839th Bomb Squadron USAAF, nicknamed 'Chief Wapello' by the crew. The 839th were based at RAF Lavenham in Suffolk from April 1944 until the end of the war, initially flying the Liberator, and later the Flying Fortress.
RAF Lavenham was built in 1943 and closed in 1948, with the land returned to agricultural use; little remains of it today, save for the old control tower.
This Second World War illustration by artist Rob Wisdom is a high-quality Giclée art print on cotton-rich fine art paper.
12x16" art print shown. Cropping and title position (if applicable) may differ slightly on 'A' size art prints.
