High-quality greeting card of the village of Battlesbridge on the River Crouch in Essex. Battlesbridge has always been defined by its position at the head of the navigable part of the River Crouch; indeed, the village's very name is taken from the bridge that has crossed the river there since the 14th century - the present bridge dating from 1872. Battlesbridge was, in medieval times, a small but busy port, and by the 19th century was visited by a constant stream of London barges.
Today, Battlesbridge is known for its antiques centre. The Old Granary building depicted in this illustration is now known as the Antique & Craft Centre, and is home to more than two dozen small business, from antique shops to boutiques to a tearoom. Surrounding the village itself is a conservation area.
