High quality greeting card of Colchester Castle, an 11th century Norman castle in Colchester, Essex. Located in the centre of Colchester, the castle boasts an impressive museum, and is at the heart of Castle Park, a Grade II listed Victorian park.

Colchester Castle was built shortly after the Norman Conquest, using the ruins of the Roman-era Temple of Claudius as its foundation. The largest medieval keep in Europe, Colchester Castle was built to the same design as the Tower of London, enlarged to use the entirety of its Roman foundations. Throughout the years, Colchester Castle was besieged by King John in 1216, was the headquarters of Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins, was the site of the execution of Royalist generals Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle, and was partially demolished in the 17th century. In 1815, a sycamore tree was planted atop the castle to celebrate the Battle of Waterloo.
