Original art print of an A34 Comet tank, as used by the British Army during the final year of the Second World War. The successor to the earlier A27M Cromwell cruiser tank, the Comet was powered by a Rolls-Royce Meteor engine and sported a 17-pounder high-velocity anti-tank gun. This made it one of the finest tanks of the war: reliable, mobile, and with impressive firepower. A crew of five was required: commander, gunner, loader, driver, and hull gunner. Around 1,200 Comet tanks were built in total, primarily by Leyland Motors, but also by a number of other manufactures including English Electric.
The Comet depicted in this illustration is 'CRUSADER' of the 5th Battalion Royal Tank Regiment, part of the 11th Armoured Division. The Comet first entered service with the 11th Armoured Division in December 1944. With 'The Black Bull', the Comet took part in Operation Plunder, crossing the Rhine River at Wesel, and later was involved in the capture of Lübeck and Neustadt during the push towards the Baltic coast. After the Second World War, the Comet remained in British Army service until 1958, alongside the Centurion main battle tank.
