High quality art print of a Douglas C-47 Skytrain, known in Commonwealth service as the Dakota. An American military transport aircraft, the C-47 was used by several Allied air forces throughout World War Two. Based on the civilian Douglas DC-3, a total of 10,174 C-47s were manufactured from 1941 onwards.
The C-47 saw use in both the Pacific and European theatres of World War Two. In the Pacific, the C-47 was famous for flying 'The Hump,' a route that took them over the Himalaya mountains to bring supplies from India to China. In Europe, it is better known for its paratroop variant, the C-53 Skytrooper (or Dakota), which dropped 4,381 paratroopers during the invasion of Sicily, and more than 50,000 during the D-Day landings of the Normandy invasion.
Postwar, the United States Air Force continued to operate C-47s until 2008, most notably during the Berlin Airlift. Thousands of C-47s were sold into the civilian market, and were operated by airlines as late as 2012.
This illustration by Rob Wisdom is a high-quality Giclée art print on cotton-rich fine art paper.
