The European Ford Escort, best known as a classic family car, also has a long track record in motorsport events such as motor rallying. This illustration depicts a Ford Escort MkI RS1600 competing in the 1974 RAC Rally (now known as the Wales Rally GB and, on one occasion, the Rally of Great Britain). 'Flying Finn' Timo Mäkinen drove a Ford Escort MkI RS1600 on his way to winning the race, defending his title from the year before, also won in an Escort MkI.
