Hurricane (No. 302 Squadron) Greeting Card

High quality greeting card of the Hawker Hurricane fighter, as flown by No. 302 (City of Poznan) Polish Fighter Squadron of the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. One of several Polish Air Force units which flew with the RAF following the fall of Poland in 1939, No. 302 Squadron was formed in 1940 from veterans of the Polish Air Force, the first Polish squadron in Fighter Command, and flew with the RAF until December 1946. In that time, it took part in the Battle of Britain, and was based at RAF Leconfield and RAF Duxford.

The Hurricane in this illustration is P3935 WX-D. On 15 September 1940, Flt Lt Julian Kowalski took WX-D to the air and shot down a Dornier 17 bomber. Kowalski would go on to command 302 Squadron, and later become commander of No.1 Polish Wing, operating from RAF Northolt. After the war, Kowalski settled in Ipswich, where he lived until his death in 1986. Today, the Polish Heritage Flight's Hurricane G-HURI wears the markings of Kowalski's Hurricane.
