Original illustration of Les Lacets de Montvernier (the shoelaces of Montvernier), a popular road cycling course in the Maurienne valley in France. The valley presents a passage through the region of Savoy, the historic gateway between France and Italy, and is bounded by the Dauphiné Alps and Cottian Alps to the south, and the Vanoise massif (part of the Graian Alps) to the north. Much of the valley is part of Parc national de la Vanoise (Vanoise National Park), France's first national park and one of its largest; it adjoins Italy's Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso (Gran Paradiso National Park), with the two together forming the largest alpine national park.

Les Lacets de Montvernier was constructed from 1931 to 1934, but did not feature in the Tour de France bicycle race for the first time until 2015. The route climbs up through no less than seventeen switchbacks along its length, presenting cyclists with a superb view out over the natural beauty of the Maurienne valley. The top of the ascent is generally given as being 790 metres above sea level.

This illustration by Rob Wisdom is a high quality Giclée art print on cotton-rich fine art paper.
