Markshall Estate can trace its history back to the Domesday book in 1086, when it was known as Mercheshala, a name it took from the de Merc family who held the estate as tenants of the Earl of Essex; the de Merc family also gave their name to nearby Mark's Tey. A century later the family had adopted the surname Merkshall, and they held the estate through to the 16th century. The present name of Markshall is first recorded in 1605.
