High quality greeting card of Mersea, Essex. Mersea is a tidal island in the Blackwater Estuary, nine miles south-east of Colchester, that is connected to the Essex mainland by a causeway known as the Strood - which historians have identified as having been constructed in the 7th century. Colchester Road runs across the Strood, but is often submerged at high tide.
Mersea Island is known for its beaches, which make the island a popular destination for tourists from across Essex and further afield. West Mersea - the island's town - is particularly popular with tourists, as much of the beach is lined with idyllic beach huts, some of which have stood for a century. Two Sugars Cafe, situated on the waterfront in West Mersea, is located inside of a Second World War-era pillbox. This illustration frames the view through the iconic beach huts of that tantalising first glimpse of the beach and sea.
