Orwell Bridge, Suffolk

High quality greeting card of the Orwell Bridge, which crosses the River Orwell to the south of Ipswich in Suffolk, from Wherstead on the west bank, to the site of the former Ipswich Airport on the east bank. Built from 1979 to 1982, the Orwell Bridge is a concrete box girder bridge, crossing the Orwell in 18 spans, with a total length of 1,287 metres. The bridge carries the A14 (Ipswich Bypass) over the water, and is used by almost 70,000 vehicles per day. At its highest, the bridge rises to 43 metres, allowing for shipping traffic heading to and from the Port of Ipswich to pass beneath.

While controversial at the time of its construction, the Orwell Bridge has come to be an iconic symbol of Ipswich and the River Orwell more generally. Depicted in this illustration is a view from the western side of the River Owell, near Freston. The road that runs near the river, the Strand, presents a number of dramatic views of the Orwell Bridge gently curving across the water.
