Original art print of Pin Mill, Suffolk, a small hamlet on the outskirts of Chelmondiston. The origin of the name is unclear, as there is no mill at Pin Mill, nor is there strong evidence that there ever has been. Instead the hamlet is known for the Butt and Oyster public house, which has been on the site since at least 1456; a time when Pin Mill was a popular stopping point for ships bringing goods to Ipswich; Pin Mill represented the River Orwell's highest navigable point for many deep-draughted vessels, and so sailors would transfer their goods onto smaller boats, and then celebrate a job well done with a drink at the Butt and Oyster.
Today Pin Mill is still popular with sailors, though these days they tend to be sailing for pleasure, not for commerce. Local boatyard Harry King & Sons has been tending to boats in Pin Mill since the 1850s. Pin Mill Sailing Club has run an annual Barge Match since 1962, and regattas since 1883, for much of that time (including presently) on an annual basis. The hamlet is known not only for sailing, but also for its appearance in films such as Ha'penny Breeze and TV shows such as Lovejoy.
This Suffolk illustration by artist Tom Wisdom is a high-quality Giclée art print on cotton-rich fine art paper.
