Original illustration of RAF/USAAF Rivenhall, showing a Martin B-26 Marauder from the 596th Bomb Squadron USAAF. The 596th was formed in April 1943 and sent to England the following year, operating through much of 1944 from RAF Rivenhall in Essex. From there they flew bombing missions, including Operation Crossbow against V-1 launch sites, and Operation Cobra in support of the Allied advance from Normandy after D-Day.

In August 1944 the squadron relocated to forward airfields in newly liberated Europe. During this period they earned the Distinguished Unit Citation for their role in the Battle of the Bulge. Altogether the 596th carried out over 200 combat missions before being inactivated soon after the war’s end.

RAF Rivenhall itself was later used as a camp for Polish refugees escaping the Soviet Union. In the 1950s it was sold to Marconi for radar trials. Today most of the site lies abandoned, with only a few buildings left in ruins.

This Second World War illustration by artist Rob Wisdom is a high-quality Giclée travel poster on cotton-rich fine art paper.

12x16" art print shown. Cropping and title position (if applicable) may differ slightly on 'A' size art prints.
