High quality greeting card of Saffron Walden, a town in the Uttlesford district of Essex, not far from the Cambridgeshire border. Saffron Walden has a long history as a market town, receiving its first market charter sometime around 1300; the town's wool trade flourished throughout the medieval period, but it was the town's growing of saffron - a spice more valuable than gold - in the 16th and 17th centuries that gave it its name. Saffron Walden's history has left the town with a wealth of picturesque historic buildings, giving it its charming character.
The star of this illustration is the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Saffron Walden's iconic church. A Grade I listed building, the church is the largest non-cathedral church in Essex, with the tallest spire in the county - clocking in at 193 feet high. There was a church on the site at least as early as 1130, though the current structure dates to the middle of the 13th century, and changes were made in the 15th and 19th centuries before it settled into its current form.
