Original illustration of the village of Silver End, between Witham and Braintree, Essex. Silver End was created in the 1920s as a 'model village' - the brainchild of local industrial magnate Francis Crittall, owner of Crittall Windows Ltd. Crittall envisioned a pleasant village where everyone had comfortable homes, modern utilities, and plenty of light and space; in short, the opposite of the crowded slums that were all-too-common in Britain at the time.

To bring his vision to fruition, Crittall sought out celebrated architects of the modernist school, including John Burnet and T.S. Tait. This was a true development of a community, and the buildings created included a department store, cinema, library, and health clinic alongside the factory and houses. Several of the houses are now Grade II listed buildings, including the one depicted in this illustration, 'Wolverton.'

This Essex illustration by artist Rob Wisdom is a high-quality Giclée art print on archival quality fine art paper. For our Silver End travel poster, click here.
