High quality art print of South Benfleet, a town in the Castle Point district of southern Essex; close to Canvey Island and to Hadleigh Castle. Benfleet was one of the earliest Anglo-Saxon towns in Essex, dating back to the 5th century, and in 894 was the site of the Battle of Benfleet between the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. The town later became known as South Benfleet to distinguish it from the small village of North Benfleet.

Depicted in this illustration is a view of Essex Way. Prominent is the Anchor Inn, which is one of the oldest buildings in South Benfleet, having been built around 1380 as a courthouse. Outside the Anchor Inn can be found the South Benfleet War Memorial. In the background of the illustration is the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which dates back to the 12th century in its present form; earlier churches were present on the site at least as far back as the Battle of Benfleet in the ninth century. Also in the illustration is world's first mini-roundabout, at the junction of Essex Way, the High Road, and the High Street.
