High-quality greeting card of the Kursaal in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. Built in 1901, the Kursaal was one of the first purpose-built amusement arks, and would go on to be the largest fairground in the south of England. The Kursaal is depicted here in its Edwardian heyday, when it was claiming more than 100,000 visitors every week. Today, however, the Kursaal is mostly vacant, with outdoor amusements closed in 1973, and indoor attractions in 2019 and 2020.
Southend-on-Sea itself is today a flourishing new city, having been granted city status in 2022. It is home to Southend Pier, the world's longest pleasure pier, to London Southend Airport, and to a population of more than 180,000 people.
This is part of our collection of Southend-on-Sea greeting cards. You can see the full collection here.
