Sudbury, Suffolk

Sudbury, a market town in the Babergh district of Suffolk, near the border with Essex. A historic market town, Sudbury dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period, but truly emerged in the reign of Edward III when Flemish wool merchants settled in the area. For a time, the Woolsack - the seat of the speaker - in the House of Lords was stuffed with wool from Sudbury. Sudbury later became famous through the paintings of Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable in the 18th and 19th centuries, and later through Dodie Smith's One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which takes place in the town.

This illustration shows a view of Market Hill, leading up towards the 14th century St Peter's Church, now a local arts centre under the stewardship of the Churches Conservation Trust. Outside the church is a statue of painter Thomas Gainsborough, and of course, a host of colourful market stalls.
