High quality art print of the Hythe in Maldon, Essex. The Hythe sits at the confluence of the River Chelmer and the Blackwater Estuary, and in its 19th-century heyday the quay there was a regular port of call for Thames Barges, shipping hay to London and returning with manure for the local farms. St Mary's Church, which has been on the site for over a millenium, can be seen in the background.
Today, the Hythe is a flourishing part of Maldon, popular with locals and visitors alike. The quay, no longer used for cargo, is now home to pleasure craft, many of which are used for bird-watching and sight-seeing trips. Two pubs - the Queen's Head and the Jolly Sailor - can be found at the Hythe, as can the Barge Tearooms and boat trips.
Each year, the world-famous Maldon Mud Race passes through the Hythe, with hundreds of competitors racing 500 metres through the mud. All proceeds from the Mud Race are donated to charity.
