High-quality greeting card of Thorpe Bay in the City of Southend-on-Sea, Essex. Located four miles to the east of Southend proper, the Thorpe Bay of today can be traced back to the early 20th century. With the opening of Thorpe Bay railway station in 1910, the previously rural area quickly grew into suburbs. Indeed, the area's current name, Thorpe Bay, comes from the station - it had previously been known simply as Thorpe, with the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway adding 'Bay' to the name to promote tourism.
Depicted in this illustration is a view of Thorpe Bay's famous beach, including the picturesque beach huts for which it is known. Thorpe Bay Beach is popular with visitors from Southend and further afield, in no small part thanks to its views over the Thames Estuary.
