The largest town on Mersea Island, West Mersea is home to approximately 8,000 people, and is a popular destinations for visitors from throughout Essex, in no small part due to its golden beaches and idyllic beach huts, which can be seen in this illustration. A peaceful and relaxed seaside town, Mersea offers a different experience to Essex's larger seaside destinations, such as Clacton-on-Sea and Southend-on-Sea.

Located within the City of Colchester (until recently, known as Colchester Borough), Mersea Island is joined to the rest of Essex by the Strood - a causeway constructed in the Anglo-Saxon era, and which is submerged at high tide.
