High quality greeting card of Writtle, a village a mile to the west of Chelmsford in Essex. Writtle is a village with a surprising dose of Scottish royal history - Robert the Bruce, who went on to become King of Scotland, was likely born in the village. A thriving village in medieval times, Writtle is still home to a large number of timber-framed houses. Today, the village is home to Writtle University College, founded in 1893.
Depicted in this illustration is Writtle Village Green in the centre of the village. The village green is perhaps best known for the idyllic views over the duck pond - formally known as the Wear Pond. The duck pond was home to 'Godfrey', a goose who is said to have lived to the ripe old age of 45. Following Godfrey's death in 2015, a life-size statue of him was fund-raised by the people of Writtle, and unveiled in 2016.
