High quality art print of Chelmsford, the county town of Essex. Chelmsford's history stretches back to Roman times, when it was known as Caesaromagus. Chelmsford began to take on its modern character in the medieval period, being granted a market in 1199, and becoming the county town of Essex by 1218. In the modern period, Chelmsford became the 'birthplace of radio,' home to Marconi's first wireless factory (1899) and first wireless broadcasts (1920), and became the seat of the Church of England's Diocese of Chelmsford (1914). Today, Chelmsford is a flourishing city with a vibrant nightlife, having received city status in 2012 as part of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Depicted in this illustration is Shire Hall, a Grade-II listed building on Tindal Square. Built in 1791 to host Essex County Council and the local assize courts, Shire Hall was designed by architect John Johnson in the classic style. Shire Hall overlooks Tindal Square at the head of Chelmsford High Street, and is an iconic part of the city's history. Today, Shire Hall stands empty, though plans for its redevelopment are being developed.
