Original art print of a Douglas C-47 (known as the Dakota in RAF service, and as the Skytrain in American service) transport aircraft that was developed from the civilian Douglas DC-3 airliner.
Depicted in this illustration is Skytrain 42-100882, nicknamed "Drag 'em Oot." Drag 'em Oot was assigned to the 87th Troop Carrier Squadron, and took part in the D-Day landings, delivering paratroopers of the US 82nd Airborne Division. In September 1944, Drag 'em Oot was transferred to the RAF's No. 1 Heavy Glider Servicing Unit. With the RAF, the aircraft took part in Operation Market Garden, sustaining twelve bullet holes through the cockpit. Following repairs, it was transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The aircraft eventually ended up in private ownership in the USA. In the early 2000s it was bought and restored by British enthusiast Paddy Green, who tracked down the aircraft's D-Day pilot Bill Allin, giving him the chance to fly his old aircraft again. Today, the aircraft is once again in the markings of Drag 'em Oot, as it was on D-Day, and continues to fly in the United Kingdom.
