Dambusters (No. 617 Squadron RAF) Giclée Art Print
Premium art print of the Avro Lancaster bomber, Britain's main strategic bomber aircraft of the Second World War. Depicted in this illustration is a scene from the iconic Dambusters Raid, with three specially-modified No. 617 Squadron Dambuster Lancasters over the Möhne Dam; front and centre is Lancaster AJ-G, piloted by Wing Commander Guy Gibson.
The Dambusters Raid (formally known as Operation Chastise) was one of the most daring bombing runs of the Second World War, with specifically-modified Avro Lancaster bombers flying low over Germany and dropping bouncing bombs (designed by Barnes Wallis) to strike the dams while avoiding the defences. Eight of the Lancasters were lost during the raid, along with fifty-three aircrew, however the operation proved a major success, with the Möhne Dam and Edersee Dam breached, and the Sorpe Dam damaged. Guy Gibson, the leader of No. 617 Squadron, was awarded the Victoria Cross, and to this day the squadron are known as 'the Dambusters'.
