Original art print of a DUKW or 'Duck', an amphibious transport used by the Allied forces during the Second World War; primarily the US Army and US Marine Corps, but also in large number by the British Army, Canadian Army, and Red Army.
Developed by General Motors, the DUKW entered military service towards the end of 1942, and went on to play a major role in amphibious operations across the globe. Their first use by an invasion force came during Operation Husky (the Invasion of Sicily), and they went on to be used in Operation Overlord (the D-Day landings in Normandy), as well as in river crossings during the Battle of the Scheldt, Operation Plunder (the crossing of the Rhine), and so on. They also played a major role in the Pacific.
Today a large number of DUKWs survive, as they proved useful in civilian life. For decades, they were widely used by police forces, fire departments, oceanographic research, and so on. Most DUKWs in use today, however, are owned by tourism companies, and used to operate 'Duck tours' in cities across the globe.
This DUKW illustration by Rob Wisdom is a high-quality Giclée art print on cotton-rich fine art paper.
