St John the Baptist's Church, depicted in this illustration, overlooks most of Finchingfield from its position in the middle of the village; the church's history goes back to the 13th century, with its distinctive cupola having been added in the 18th century.

Finchingfield Brook runs through the centre of the village, which is located on the B1053 between Braintree and Saffron Walden; the nearest town to Finchingfield is Thaxted. Finchingfield is home to Olympic BMX gold medallist Beth Shriever.
