Spitfire R7066 (Galleywood) Giclée Art Print
High-quality art print of Spitfire R7066 'Galleywood', a Mark IIA Spitfire that flew with No. 403 Squadron RCAF, with the markings KH-E. As a 'presentation Spitfire,' R7066 was paid for not by the Air Ministry, but through a fundraising campaign. Thousands of individual Spitfire funds ran throughout Britain, the Empire, and beyond, raising a grand total of over £13,000,000 - enough to fund over 2,500 Spitfires at £5,000 apiece.
The Mayor of Chelmsford's Spitfire Fund raised a total of £13,500, funding R7066 (Galleywood) and R7065 (Chelmsford). Other funds in Essex raised the money for Spitfires P8677 (Colchester & District) and P7743 (Brentwood), among others.
Spitfire R7066 joined its fellow Mayor of Chelmsford's Spitfire Fund aircraft R7065 at No. 403 Squadron (RAF Ternhill) in June 1941. From here it passed to No. 52 Operational Training Unit (RAF Aston Down), and then to No. 61 OTU (RAF Heston). A crash-landing near Heston in August saw R7066 damaged beyond repair, and she was struck off. Fortunately, the pilot was uninjured.
