Hurricane (No. 303 Squadron RAF) Giclée Art Print

Original illustration of the Hawker Hurricane fighter, as flown by No. 303 "Kościuszko" Polish Fighter Squadron of the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. No. 303 Squadron was one of several fighter squadrons formed from veterans of the Polish Air Force. 303 Squadron was the most successful of the 66 Allied fighter squadrons to take part in the Battle of Britain, claiming a final tally of 126 aircraft destroyed. Two top aces flew with the squadron, Josef František (a Czechoslovak, the highest scoring foreign Allied ace of the Battle of Britain) and Witold Urbanowicz (the highest scoring Polish ace of the war, and, for a time, commander of 303 Squadron).

Depicted in this illustration if WF-F, Hurricane V6684, which was delivered to 303 Squadron in September 1940 - it was one of several aircraft to be piloted by Urbanowicz, and on 15 September he shot down two Dornier 215 bombers while piloted RF-F. Following the squadron's success in the Battle of Britain, they added an artwork to the side celebrating the 126 'Adolfs' killed. When 303 Squadron moved to the Supermarine Spitfire in 1941, V6684 passed into the ownership of 121 Squadron, and later was used by No. 55 and No. 56 Operational Training Units.
