Original illustration of RAF/USAAF Rivenhall, depicting a Martin B-26 Marauder of the 596th Bomb Squadron USAAF. The 596th were established in April 1943, and deployed to England the following year, spending most of 1944 flying bombing missions from RAF Rivenhall in Essex - including Operation Crossbow, striking against V-1 launch pads, and in Operation Cobra, supporting the Allied breakout in Normandy after D-Day.

From August 1944 onwards, the squadron was moved to advanced airfields in liberated Europe; while in Europe, the 596th were awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation for their part in the Battle of the Bulge. In all, the squadron completed more than 200 combat missions during the war, and were inactivated shortly afterwards.

RAF Rivenhall, meanwhile, became a refugee camp for Polish refugees fleeing the Soviet Union. In the 1950s the site was sold to Marconi, who used it for radar testing. Today, the site is mostly derelict, though a small number still stand as ruins.

This Second World War illustration by artist Rob Wisdom is a high-quality Giclée art print on cotton-rich fine art paper.

12x16" art print shown. Cropping and title position (if applicable) may differ slightly on 'A' size art prints.
