Original illustration of Supermarine Spitfire MK392, a Spitfire MkIX that was famously piloted by Wing Commander Johnnie Johnson; the highest-scoring British fighter ace of the Second World War, with 34 victories, 7 shared, and 3 probable. MK392 was a Spitfire MkIX with a 'C type' wing,  which was refitted in June 1944 with changed gun positions; as such, it came to resemble the later 'E type' wing.

Johnson joined the Royal Air Force in August 1939, but health issues meant that he flew just once in the Battle of Britain. His first air victory would come in June 1941, in a Circus over northern France, shooting down a Bf 109; this began a prolific record. In July 1942 he was given command of No. 610 Squadron, and in January 1943 was promoted again to Wing Commander, taking command of No. 127 Wing RCAF at RAF Kenley.

Johnson's wing was the first to be stationed in France after the D-Day Landings, at B-2 Bazenville. The wing supported the advance towards the Rhine, including Operation Market Garden, with Johnson's last victory of the war coming over Nijmegen in September 1944. Johnson remained with the RAF after the ending of the war, eventually rising to the rank of Air Vice Marshal, before retiring in 1965. He passed away in 2001 at the age of 85.
