Original illustration of a Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX, featuring Spitfire BS239 5R-E, of No. 33 Squadron RAF.
No. 33 Squadron are one of the most distinguished squadrons in Royal Air Force history, with a history stretching back to their formation in 1916 as part of the then-Royal Flying Corps. For much of the war they were based in the Mediterranean, including on Crete during the German invasion, when ground-crew fought against German paratroopers during the Allied evacuation. The squadron later provided air support at the Battle of El Alamein, before returning to Britain in 1944 to support the D-Day Landings. From there, they moved forward into Europe.
Since the Second World War, 33 Squadron has seen several periods of activity: flying the Hawker Tempest in the Malayan Emergency, and later the Westland Puma helicopter in the Gulf War and Operation Telic. With the Puma's retirement in 2025, the squadron was disbanded, with the standard retained for future revivals.
