Original art print of the Boulton Paul Defiant, a two-seater fighter monoplane used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. Designed in the inter-war period, the Defiant was a 'turret fighter', with its armament concentrated into a dorsal turret. The Defiant entered service in late 1939 and saw some initial success over Dunkirk, but eventually proved vulnerable to forward-firing fighter aircraft. It was then converted to a night fighter, where it found some success, most notably during the Blitz. After that, the Defiant was phased out, or moved into specialist roles: training, target towing, radar jamming, air-sea rescue, and even a test aircraft for early Martin-Baker ejector seats.
Depicted in this illustration is Defiant N1671, EW-D, of No. 307 (Polish) Squadron RAF – the only Polish night fighter squadron in the RAF. 307 Squadron operated the Defiant from September 1940 to 1941, from RAF Kirton-in-Lindsey, RAF Jurby, RAF Squires Gate, and RAF Exeter. Later in the war, they moved on to the Bristol Beaufighter and the de Havilland Mosquito. N1671 is today the only surviving Defiant, having first gone on display at the RAF Museum London (RAF Hendon) in 1971, and presently at the RAF Museum Midlands (RAF Cosford).
The illustration was produced in partnership with the Polish Heritage Flight, which honours the memory of the Polish pilots who served with the Royal Air Force in the Second World War. You can learn more about them and their mission here.
This illustration by Rob Wisdom is a high quality Giclée art print on cotton-rich fine art paper.
