Original art print of a Handley-Page Halifax of No. 1586 (Polish) Special Duties Flight RAF, depicted dropping supplies into Warsaw during the Warsaw Air Bridge. The Warsaw Air Bridge was a British-led Allied operation to deliver supplies to the Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa) during the Warsaw Uprising. From 4 August to 28 September 1944, the Allies dropped around 370 tons of supplies into the Warsaw region, at a cost of 41 aircraft and around 360 aircrew. The Uprising was ultimately unsuccessful, however, in no small part due to the interference of the Soviet Union. After encouraging the Uprising, the Red Army halted outside of the city and did not provide any support; furthermore, Stalin refused to allow Western aircraft to fly from Soviet airfields in support, forcing the Western Allies to fly from distant airfields in Britain and Italy.

The illustration was produced in partnership with the Polish Heritage Flight, which honours the memory of the Polish pilots who served with the Royal Air Force in the Second World War. You can learn more about them and their mission here.

This illustration by Rob Wisdom is a high quality Giclée art print on cotton-rich fine art paper.

12x16" art print shown. Cropping and title position (if applicable) may differ slightly on 'A' size art prints.
