Original illustration of the Vickers Wellington bomber, as flown by No. 300 (Land of Masovia) Polish Bomber Squadron of the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. Formed from veterans of the Polish Air Force in 1940, No. 300 Squadron was one of several such Polish squadrons which took part in the war in RAF colours. Before the war was over, No. 300 Squadron flew almost 4,000 sorties in a variety of aircraft, including Fairey Battles light bombers, Vickers Wellington medium bombers, and later the Lancaster strategic bomber.
The Wellington in this illustration is R1715, BH-S. R1715 took part in the 'Battle of the Ruhr' in which RAF Bomber Command devastated targets throughout Germany's industrial heartland, but was shot down off of the coast of the Netherlands on the 21 June 1943. Sadly, none of the crew survived.
The illustration was produced in partnership with the Polish Heritage Flight, which honours the memory of the Polish pilots who served with the Royal Air Force in the Second World War. You can learn more about them and their mission here.
